Art Academy of Westchester
Classes for Children

Classes for Children (9 and up).

Classes for children are offered weekdays from 4pm to 6pm and on weekends. Classes include:

Drawing and Beginning Painting

Many of the great artists of the 19th and early 20th century, such
as Manet, Degas, and Picasso, were traditionally trained. One
method of teaching artists was to start drawing with still lifes,
then drawing with cast figures, gradually transitioning to painting.
This class follows this training. Students learn to draw directly from
observation working with pencil and charcoal and gradually
progressing into grisaille painting (gray scale). Colors will be
introduced. Techniques such as sighting for proportional
relationships, contour line, and shading are explored, with
emphasis on the elements of line, shape, value, texture, space,
and principles of strong composition. The student will train their eye
to see accurate angles and size relationships and subtle differences
of line, tone, form, and edges, while attaining a mastery over drawing
materials including learning how to draw with the brush.
Instruction will be tailored to individual student levels and needs.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 4pm to 6pm. Instructor: Vicente Saavedra

The Artistic Process: Sculpture for Children

A fun and informative class for ages 9 and up.
Students will receive age-appropriate instruction allowing them to learn
how to sculpt by first learning how to really look—to see with an artist’s eye.
They will learn to do sketches in pencil, multi-angle drawings, detail drawings,
sketches in wire and clay, armature-building, then full-size sculpture. Materials
(drawing pad and pencils, armature wire, basic modeling tools, plywood, etc.)
can be supplied for a fee or may be brought in by students from a materials
list that will be provided at time of registration. All levels are encouraged to join.

Saturday 10am to 12pm. Instructor: Michele Firpo-Cappiello

Young Artists, ages 6 to 12

Through the eyes of past masters from Michaelangelo to Pollock, these art classes will explore all sorts of interesting movements in Art History. Children will learn that not all art is representational and gain confidence to express their own ideas with a variety of materials and techniques such as collage, color mixing, sculpting, and others. The children will study and discuss the work of a famous artist or style of artwork (e.g Aboriginal Art) and then make a practical rendition of the work in either 2 or 3 dimensional form.

Instructor: Helen Elliott (Please see our page menu for days and times).
