Sculpting Classes with Suanne Martin

Bring your own Project: Clay Sculpture for All Levels

This class is open to those new to modeling in waterclay and those who have worked in clay before. Students will be working on specific projects that they wish to make using their own reference materials (drawings, pictures etc.) as a guide. Students will work in a low fire ceramic clay that can be fired after they are completed with their work. The instructor will show techniques in clay building, armatures, modeling techniques, and discuss proportions, anatomy and history of sculpting.

The Artistic Process: Sculpture for Children

A fun and informative class for ages 9 and up.
Students will receive age-appropriate instruction allowing them to learn
how to sculpt by first learning how to really look—to see with an artist’s eye.
They will learn to do sketches in pencil, multi-angle drawings, detail drawings,
sketches in wire and clay, armature-building, then full-size sculpture. Materials
(drawing pad and pencils, armature wire, basic modeling tools, plywood, etc.)
can be supplied for a fee or may be brought in by students from a materials
list that will be provided at time of registration. All levels are encouraged to join.

Portrait Sculpting

Students work from the live model, sculpting the portrait using traditional methods and techniques. Emphasis is placed on finding proper proportion, balance, and anatomical structure. Demonstrations of individual techniques are offered. We recommend that beginners start with cast sculpting. All levels are welcome.

Figure Sculpting

Working with a live model, this class will allow students to explore the human form through modeling in clay. Students will learn how to look and understand what they see using anatomy, form, proportion, composition, and design. The instructor will demonstrate armature building and modelling techniques and provide individual instruction appropriate to each student's experience. This class is designed to give a firm foundation in technique, but help students create sculptures that are alive with individual expression. Materials list provided at time of registration. All levels are encouraged to join.

Ecorche Sculpting

Students work with a one-half scale figurative armature and build an anatomical structure of the human figure. Beginning with the skeletal structure and moving outwards towards the surface, emphasis is on locating and building muscle forms that are important elements which inform the foundation and balance of the human figure. We will be working from Houdon's famous ecorche cast of the figure in motion, supplemented with Bammes' German text on anatomy, and others.

Sculpture - Cast Sculpting/Independent Projects

Students work from classical casts, or photographs to create
a sculpture using traditional methods and techniques.
Emphasis is placed on finding proper proportion, balance,
and anatomical structure, if applicable. Demonstrations
of individual techniques are offered. We recommend
that beginners start with cast sculpting. All levels are welcome.

High School Portfolio Development

High School Juniors and Seniors may join any sculpture classes in
order to work on fulfilling their 3-Dimensional requirements.
Our instructors have worked extensively with High School
art students and offer regular sculpture portfolio reviews.
